About the Craighall Suburb of SandtonSandton Information > Craighall Bordered by the suburbs of Hyde Park, Dunkeld and Parkhurst; Craighall is a suburb of Sandton situated in Johannesburg, South Africa. Craighall is one of Johannesburg's oldest suburbs and lies between the busy Johannesburg arterial routes of Jan Smuts Avenue and William Nichol. Craighall was established in 1902 after the farm Klipfontein was divided into a residential development as well as a recreational development of lakes and parkland. The owner of the farm, William Rattray, named it Craighall after his birthplace in Blairgowrie, Scotland. Craighall is well known for the rocky waterfall on the Braamfontein Spruit toward the north-west of the suburb. The waterfall flows year-round but becomes a dramatic spectacle during heavy rain storms. Craighall is a spacious, treed residential suburb with abundant bird-life. The Florence Bloom Bird Sanctuary which is situated in Delta Park on the Braamfontein Spruit is home to over 200 species of birds. The spruit is also home to several sports clubs and it also has a public footpath which takes you past old mine diggings. Craighall is situated just a few blocks away from the Hyde Park Corner shopping mall and the Hyde Square shopping centre.
