Attractions of Sandton > Sandton Convention Centre

sandton convention centreSituated at the heart of Sandton Central, the Sandton Convention Centre is close to all the important financial and industrial concerns in the country. The centre boasts the latest state-of-the-art facilities with in-house technology partners offering infra-red simultaneous translation systems, ISDN, asynchronous digital subscriber lines (ADSL) and wireless Internet broadband connectivity (Wi-Fi) as well as satellite broadcasting and conferencing facilities.

The 12-storey building has more than 22 000 m² of meeting, exhibition and special-event space. Multiple events can be staged simultaneously on four levels and up to 10 000 visitors can be accommodated at any one time. Room capacities range from a 10-seat function room to the Pavilion, which can cater for 4 500 cocktail guests.

There are 26 escalators in the two escalator wells of the centre, so delegates can enter and exit the building quickly and efficiently. The Sandton Convention Centre is surrounded by nearly 11 000 parking bays, situated in three big parking arcades. The security system is such that the building can be evacuated in a matter of minutes, should the alarm system go off.

The most prestigious event staged at Sandton Convention Centre is undoubtedly the World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002 and its success demonstrated the Sandton Convention Centre's and South Africa’s ability to stage big events efficiently. At the time that the United Nations was looking for a site to stage the summit, the Sandton Convention Centre became the obvious choice for hosting heads of state in a secure environment. In September 2005 the Sandton Convention Centre successfully hosted the 18th World Petroleum Congress, and it was the first time in its 70 years of existence that the congress was held in Africa. The conference had a total of 3 135 registered delegates representing governments, oil, gas and related industries, academics and international media from more than 62 member countries.

18th WPC also saw the largest Oil and Gas Exhibition running alongside the conference over three levels using a total of 15 000 square metres, making it the largest international exhibition that the Sandton Convention Centre has hosted to date.
